Getting Great Shots with Babies, Toddlers, and Kids—No Stress Required
Worried your little one won’t sit still for family photos? You’re not alone and you don’t need perfect behavior to get beautiful, connected images. In this post, I’m sharing my favorite tips for working with babies, toddlers, and kids during family sessions, based on years of experience as a Huntsville photographer, after school program director, and mom. I’ve been there and I promise: photo sessions with little kids can be lighthearted, relaxed, and full of real, beautiful moments. Here are my favorite tried-and-true tips for getting your baby, toddler, or energetic kid involved without meltdowns or forced smiles. With a little prep, some playful tricks, and a flexible mindset, your family session can be cozy, fun, and full of joy.

Tip 1: Make it a Game
Curious babies, inquisitive toddlers, and energetic kids naturally love to move, explore, and be silly. Their first impression of me often decides if I’m a “teammate” they can trust and that’s key to getting those genuine smiles.
To break the ice and ease any stranger anxiety, I start sessions with a playful “look at” game. I give prompts like, “Look at the person who would probably be in a rock band,” or “Look at the person who would eat purple ketchup.” This encourages your family to look at and interact with each other first—sparking laughter, connection, and those natural smiles that come from being with loved ones.
Alongside this, I often add a little scavenger hunt—something like, “First one back to me with a flower wins!”—which lets kids explore their surroundings, get comfortable with the new environment, and start interacting with me naturally.
Slowly, as everyone warms up and the smiles flow, I gently guide their gaze toward me or the camera. This way, those beautiful, authentic expressions aren’t forced—they’re a natural progression from family connection to camera-ready joy.
P.S - I may also totally wear funny hats, finger puppets, headbands, and flashing lights. Sometimes one must become a prop!
Tip 2: Let Them Bring a Comfort Item
Little ones often find new environments and strangers a bit overwhelming. That’s why I encourage families to bring along a favorite comfort item, whether it’s a beloved stuffed animal, a cozy blanket, or a special toy. Having something familiar nearby helps kids feel safe and grounded during the session. It also gives them something to focus on when they’re feeling shy or unsure. Plus, these treasured items often make for sweet, meaningful photos that capture your child’s personality and comfort.
We usually start the session with the comfort item in hand to help your child feel secure and relaxed. As the session progresses and they grow more comfortable, I’ll gently guide them to set the item aside or put it down nearby. This way, the transition feels natural and unforced, and you’ll still get plenty of photos of your child fully engaged without the comfort item in every shot.
This gradual approach keeps the session calm and connected, and results in a beautiful mix of candid, cozy moments and clean, focused portraits.
Tip 3: Involve Them
Depending on their age, kids love feeling like they’re part of what’s happening and that includes family photos! One fun way to engage toddlers and older kids is by letting them take photos with the camera during the session.
I might hand them the camera for a moment and ask, “What kind of pictures do you want to take of Mom or your little brother?” or “Where should we take some photos next?” This gives them a sense of ownership and creativity, making the experience more exciting and less like “just sitting still.”
When kids get involved like this, they’re more relaxed and curious, and it often leads to natural smiles and genuine moments. Plus, it creates memories where they feel proud of their role, not just as the subject of the photos, but as an active participant in making them.
Tip 4: Little Bribes (No Shame Here!)
Let’s be honest—sometimes kids just need a little motivation. I come fully prepared with a stash of snacks and treats to keep everyone happy and energized during the session. From fruit snacks to crackers and tiny non-food surprises, I’ve got plenty of options (all mess-free and easy to handle!).
Bribing might sound funny, but it really helps keep toddlers and kids engaged and cooperative, especially when they’re getting tired or distracted. Plus, having a snack to look forward to can turn a frown upside down in seconds!
Pro tip: Keep any snacks you bring hidden until they’re truly needed. That way, it feels like a special treat and keeps kids excited to participate.
Tip 5: Timing
Timing is everything when it comes to family photo sessions with little ones. I always recommend scheduling your session around your child’s natural routine, ideally after naps and snacks, when they’re well-rested and full of energy.
Avoid times when kids might be hungry, tired, or cranky, as that can make it harder to get those joyful, relaxed smiles. Morning or early evening sessions often work well, especially when the light is soft and flattering.
If you’re unsure about timing, just ask! I’m happy to help you find a session time that works best for your family’s unique rhythm, making the experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
Tip 6: Letting Go of Expectations
Family photo sessions don’t have to be perfect or picture-perfect every second. Some of the most memorable and heartwarming photos come from the “in-between” moments, the giggles sparked by a silly prompt, the spontaneous hug, or the curious glance between siblings.
I encourage families to relax, let go of any pressure, and embrace whatever happens naturally. When you stop stressing about perfect poses or smiles, your family can enjoy the experience more, and those genuine moments shine through the most.
